Burkina Faso Healthcare: Ibrahim Traoré Pledges Regional Solidarity

"We see our brothers and sisters from neighboring countries crossing borders to seek care in our hospitals because of the quality and the subsidies we have put in place. Some might see this as a burden, but we see it as a duty," Captain Ibrahim Traoré declared during his New Year address on December 31, 2025.

The President of Burkina Faso emphasized that the nation would not adopt xenophobic policies despite the increased strain on its medical sector. Instead, he committed to expanding the Burkina Faso healthcare infrastructure to accommodate all Africans, stating, "We will not close our doors or treat them as strangers. Instead, we are increasing our medical budget and building more centers."

Following the recent adoption of the 2026 national budget, which is valued at over 3,431 billion CFA francs, the government has prioritized health alongside security. This fiscal plan supports the "Emergency Medical Assistance Service" (SAMU) and the construction of over 50 new hospitals designed to operate without foreign aid.

Traoré’s stance reinforces the unity of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which includes Mali and Niger. By rejecting the exclusion of neighboring citizens, the Burkina Faso leader aimed to demonstrate practical Pan-Africanism, concluding that "our struggle is one, and our resources must serve the dignity of all Africans."
