we are talking about the members and associates of a group known as the "Family" or the "Preacher Crew. This criminal organization engaged in murder, assault, robbery, extortion, other acts of violence, and narcotics trafficking. The crew was led by Clarence heatley, also known as, preacher. Some even called him dad, but he would adopt another moniker, the black hand of death. it’s been almost 30 years since his crew has been off the street, but his name still ring bells, as his story is intertwined with that of harlem’s own, rich porter. That moment was partially covered in the movie paid in full, which we will discuss later on. The Preacher Crew operated principally in Harlem and the Bronx, and in Union City, Georgia. Allegedly, they were responsible for at least forty to fifty murders over a ten year span. It’s alleged, that the name preacher came from his manipulative ways, talking his way into whatever he desired. Success in the drug business requires a strong team, and a crew wasn’t able to hold the block down, it would be taken over by those willing to buss their guns. Some guys who weren’t about the gun game, would look to enlist other crews, to do the dirty work. Typically, preacher’s crew would pick up murder contracts in the drug trade for the standard fee of $5,000 per murder, fulfill the contracts, but then turn on those who took out the contracts, whom they identified as weak for relying on outsiders for their problems. The Preacher Crew then extorted fees from these hapless dealers for use of the street corners where they plied their trade. If the dealers did not listen to reason, the Preacher Crew killed them and took over their spots.......Darnell porter was rich porters little bro. rich was getting a lot of money in harlem, as were other guys. Apple, riches uncle, was not seeing the money that rich was seeing, and could have been jealous. So, what does apple do? he comes up with a plan to kidnap his own nephew and riches little brother, darnell. He brings the idea to preacher, who unbeknownst to apple, was disgusted at apple for considering to do this to his own kin. Crazy thing is, word on the street, preacher was extorting rich in some way or another anyway. It was said that preacher had a way of just having u do what he wanted. If he could, he’d Make you sell his drugs in your operation, And if you obliged to that, he was your best buddy. The morning of December 5th, 12-year-old darnell Porter left his crowded railroad apartment on 132nd Street in Harlem, walked down the dirty stairs, past the rotting sofa filled with garbage in the front of his building, and started off to school. He never showed up in the school that day, he had been kidnapped. darnell's mother discovered her son was missing at 4 P.M. that day, when he did not come home from school. At 5 P.M., she received the first of seven telephone calls, with darnell crying on the phone. A caller believed to be male asked for $500,000 in ransom, but Mrs. Porter said they could not afford the ransom. Allegedly, rich had about 250,000, and preacher was ready to settle for that, but supposedly apple was like nah, we cuh get more. The next day, a caller told the family to go to the nearby McDonald's restaurant, and a family friend found two rings there that belonged to darnell, a two-inch piece of an index finger
