William Shakespeare (1564 –1616) was an English playwright, poet, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's greatest dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon”. His existing works, including collaborations, consist of some 39 plays, 154 sonnets, three long narrative poems, and a few other verses. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. ‘The Merchant of Venice’ was written by him in the 16th century C.E, featuring the Italian cities of Venice and Belmont. It was first classified to be a comedy, on account of its dramatic scenes and love stories having happy endings. Shakespearean comedies are particularly light-hearted or humorous, all ending with at least one marriage. The practice of ending a comedy with a wedding provides the audience with assurance that whatever conflicts arise in the play it will be resolved, and it will not have any negative consequences on the protagonists or society at large.
