Female Eurasian BullFinch (Pyrrhula pyrrhula)

This bulky bull-headed bird I associate with winter, as this was the time it started to show up in small flocks on our bird feeder when I grew up in Norway.

I placed a small wireless microphone in this little tree that was teaming with birds. To better show of this bird I also filmed it in 120 FPS and play it back in 25 FPS.

During the winter months until spring, this forest bird can often be seen in the garden, eating on mixed seeds and sunflower seeds.

Female birds has grey-brown underparts and mantle, white rump, a tiny thick blackish bill.

In Europe, between 1980 and 2013 the population declined but now new data show that the population is rising again.

Fun facts About The Eurasian Bullfinch

They lay between 4-6 eggs during the nesting season from late April to mid-September. The nest is constructed of dry grass, plant fibres, roots, moss, lichen and leaves. The nest can be found up to five metres from the ground in thick bush / shrub or on the lower branches of a conifer tree.

Incubation lasts about 12 to 14 days where the female is helped and fed by the male. After incubation the Chicks are fed insects and seeds by the male. This food is carried in special pouches at the base of the bill, on each side of the tongue. Later when the young fledge at about 16 to 18 days, both parents feed the young.

The name ‘bullfinch’ comes from the bird’s front heavy, bull-headed appearance.

Bullfinches were once popular cage birds. Once in a cage they were taught to imitate a special bird flute or whistle.

The call is a soft piping note that carries far. Often you will hear the call but don’t see the caller.

European Bullfinch has predators, such as Corvids and weasels.
