This is why narcissists create drama even when things are going well - conflict generates the intense emotional reactions they need to feel alive. They've learned that making you explain, defend, or react gives them access to your energy without having to give anything back. It's not personal to them; you're just a resource. The tragedy is that their childhood abuse taught them this was the only way to survive, but now they're unconsciously recreating that same extraction dynamic with everyone around them.
