4. SOUNDBITE (English) Bill Rogers, evacuee:
"We got here Monday but.. and we take this stuff serious. And we live in a flood zone. And when Helene came through, it flooded our house, and we had to replace our air conditioner, our master bedroom floors and our third bedroom floors, and it cost a pretty penny..."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Bill Rogers, evacuee:
"This is the fourth time that we evacuated here and these people they're wonderful. They do a wonderful job. They really take care of you and they care about what happens. And that's why we come here. And that's why we evacuated, because we are in a flood zone. But by the looks of it, it's going to go south of us, I hope. And that means hurricanes go on the counter clockwise so that we won't hopefully get flooded. We might get a lot of wind damage. But it's very dangerous and like I said, this fourth time that we've been here over four years."
7. Various of people sheltering inside school gymnasium
8. Various of dogs in crates inside of school
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Rosemary Smith, evacuee:
"Helene flooded our house. We had four feet of water in it. They have since removed the drywall and we can't live in it now. So we found a mobile home to move into and now we're in the mobile home. And they told us to evacuate mobile homes because of the intensity of the hurricane."

STORYLINE:
Residents were sheltering at a school in New Port Richey, Florida, as hurricane Milton made landfall on Wednesday as a Category 3 storm.

Milton is bringing powerful winds, deadly storm surge and flooding Wednesday night along much of Florida’s Gulf Coast.

The cyclone had maximum sustained winds of 120 mph as it roared ashore 8:30 p.m. near Siesta Key in Sarasota County, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.

"This is the fourth time that we evacuated here and these people they're wonderful," Bill Rogers said as he sat in a school gymnasium in New Port Richey after fleeing from his home on Monday.

He said his home was flooded during Hurricane Helene, which also forced him to evacuate, causing lots of damage to his property and he hoped Milton would pass by without doing the same.

Rogers was one of many sheltering at the school including several dogs which were seen in their crates.

The National Hurricane Center says Milton was fueled by an extremely warm Gulf of Mexico.

It was expected to remain a hurricane as it crosses the Florida peninsula Thursday before emerging in the Atlantic Ocean.
