This tutorial is a little unusual as it presents short excerpts from 9 historically significant performances of the opening bars of Chopin’s Waltz in C# minor, side by side, in alphabetical order.

From these recordings, sheet music transcriptions were made and are a first of sorts made by my colleague and friend Doug Gould, a pianist and transcriber in the UK.

If you think you’ll find the featured sheet music useful in your piano studies, please download them free from a link in the video information.

While the excerpts from the following recordings have copyright ownership they are presented here for educational purposes under the terms of fair use.

Chopin’s Waltz in C# minor is a good example of a work that more often than not gets interpreted with rubato and until now, to the best of my knowledge, this is the first time rubato has been accurately transcribed from a classical piano recording and so can help the piano student, if that’s you, better understand exactly what rubato is and how pianists deviate from the printed score in order to play music the way they feel it.

I hope this in turn will encourage you to think about your own interpretation of this enigmatic Chopin Waltz.
