The Shared Futures project: From Homelessness to Finding Peace of Mind

The Shared Futures project aims to strengthen the ability of youth and religious communities to address causes of interfaith violence and promote sustainable peace and reconciliation in the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kwale and Tana River in Kenya.

Kerk in Actie, Cordaid, local partners and other organisations had already used Most Significant Change (MSC) as a Monitoring and Evaluation tool. InsightShare provided expertise in Participatory Video and helped incorporate PV and MSC together to capture the changes and results of the Shared Futures project. In this way, the films were created collectively by the participants and in a participatory manner to capture their stories of change.

After finishing high school, Hamadi Ali Mwambodze felt the responsibility to look for work as he was the firstborn in a family of nine. Hadami didn’t want to burden his father, and “tried as a man to fend for himself” but, according to him, he did not succeed.

Hamadi, nicknamed M.C., tells the story of his travels from Bomani to Nairobi in search of work and his arrest and detention at the Rwandan border for having incorrect travel and migration documents. After his arrival back in Kenya, a relationship breakdown, and the loss of respect from his community, he became homeless and involved in gang violence and drug use.

M.C. recounts how the Shared Futures project played a key role in coming back and regaining his community’s trust and returning to his faith. In his own words, “through the Shared Futures project, I learned that if you have peace of mind, you can help others have peace and a stress-free life. I attained my peace of mind and sat my friends down and passed it onto them”
