Few series in American numismatics command the admiration and respect of the historic Massachusetts silver issues of the mid-17th century. Beginning with the New England issues and continuing through the Willow, Oak and Pine series, these delightfully crude strikings literally define early North American coinage. While a reasonable number of Pine Tree issues are known, that is not the case for examples in this outstanding condition. Grading PCGS MS64 and accompanied by a CAC sticker, this superb piece features a large, lustrous planchet toned in delicate shades of gold and slate blue. The strike is exceptionally sharp, with a full legend and boldly defined centers that display the denticles, pine tree, date and denomination in all their primitive glory. This piece boasts an impressive pedigree as well, formerly residing in the collections of Virgil Brand, B.G. Johnson, T. James Clarke, F.C.C. Boyd, and Donald Groves Partrick. Needless to say, this is the finest of the variety graded by PCGS and easily one of the finest known for the type.
