DESCRIPTION: Learning designers and designers-at-heart constitute a diverse group, and we can all improve our practices by collaborating with each other through communities of practice (CoP). The Colorado Community College System is in the process of restructuring online learning into a consortial model called Colorado Online @. With this transition in mind, our learning design team has recognized the value of developing a CoP that generates a collaborative and collegial community focused on practical application and support. The professional literature and our experiences with CoPs indicate a variety of ways to structure and leverage CoPs.

The purpose of this session is to open up professional discussion around these key questions: (1) How do learning designers best learn? (2) What is the scope of an effective learning design CoP? (3) What are the most effective ways to structure a CoP? (4) What are effective strategies for designing and motivating meaningful interactions in a CoP?
