In 1959, a devastating forest fire swept through the San Bernardino National Forest, leaving behind a trail of destruction and displacing countless wild animals. Amidst the chaos, a 30-pound orphaned black bear cub and two bobcats were found and brought to a makeshift rehabilitation facility on the land where the Big Bear Alpine Zoo now stands. This humble beginning marked the inception of a sanctuary dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of injured, orphaned, and imprinted wild animals.

Today, the Big Bear Alpine Zoo stands as a testament to the power of compassion and dedication. Operating as a rehabilitation facility, it offers a second chance to wildlife in need, with the majority of animals brought in successfully released back into their native environments. Those that remain are either too injured or have been imprinted by humans and cannot survive independently in the wild
