Ukrainian Memorial Tree Planting at the U.S. National Arboretum

WHAT: To show solidarity, the U.S. Department of Agriculture welcomed Ukrainian refugee journalists Olena Gnes and Serhii Haranskyi, along with Ukrainian Ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, to the U.S. National Arboretum (USNA) for a ceremonial tree planting. The planting helps illuminate the need to safeguard plant genetic resources through international exchange with repositories such as the U.S. National Arboretum, and USDA Agricultural Research Service, which currently holds 3,000 accessions from Ukraine. The ceremony was organized as a symbolic way to show the value of exchange, collaboration, and commitment to the people of Ukraine.
