Green is Rolex's signature hue, appearing in the brand’s logo and scattered throughout the Rolex portfolio. Often, we see the vibrant color incorporated on anniversary models and other notable references.

While nearly every model in the brand’s catalog includes hints of green somewhere in its history, we’re focusing on one of the most intriguing to date, the GMT Master II.

Rolex introduced the famous pilot’s watch in the 1950s, initially equipping it with a red and blue bezel now known as the “Pepsi” bezel. They have gotten a little more creative over the years with the GMT color options, releasing a red and black bezel version referred to as the "Coke" GMT and even a black and blue edition known as the "Batman."

Green is a relatively new colorway for the GMT series, making its debut alongside the GMT Master II in the 2000s.

The 6-digit series was the first in the GMT collection to don a ceramic – aka Cerachrom – bezel and Maxi dial with larger hour markers and hands. It was also the first time we saw the striking green GMT hand, replacing the standard red on some models, including the stainless steel ref. 116710LN.

With the 6-digit GMT Master II, Rolex also upgraded the crown to the Triplock screw-down crown and furnished the collection with a then-new movement, the caliber 3186. This movement brought with it a smoother GMT hand and integration to the Paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring.

Rolex also swapped out the Cyclops lens for an anti-reflective lens and updated the case and bracelet.

Rolex introduced the 6-digit series via reference 116718 in 2005 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the GMT Master collection. Initially, the watch featured a bright green dial - something we had never seen in the GMT series before.

The green dial featured handsome yellow gold-trimmed hour markers and Mercedes hands and matching gold text. Reference 116718 also sports a stunning 18k yellow gold finish and black bezel insert decorated with matching gold 24-hour graduations.

It’s an impressive watch, no doubt about it, with a growing cult following.

Rolex introduced a black dial edition of the GMT Master II ref. 116718 a short while later, appealing to an even broader audience.

If you loved the luxurious aesthetic of a gold GMT but didn’t care for the somewhat flashier green dial, the black dial edition was probably the watch for you.

It also kept hints of green in its design, although much more understated. The GMT hand is now featured in green with a matching green GMT Master II logo.

The rest of its design set is identical to its green dial counterpart.

ROLEX 126720 GMT MASTER II

Rolex made GMT history yet again with the release of the ref. 126720 in 2022. Rolex had indeed experimented with the idea of a left-handed GMT a long time ago. However, reference 126720 was the first time we saw them release an official model for commercial sale.

The date and crown have moved from the right side of the case over to the left side, and, for the first time, the bezel is presented in black and green, now known as “Sprite.” The GMT hand is also green. However, the GMT Master II logo remains white to match the rest of the text on the dial.

Reference 126720 enjoys many modern amenities afforded to its 6-digit predecessors, including the ceramic bezel insert, Triplock screw-down crown, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, and a Maxi dial.

Only now, the hour markers are filled with Chromalight, and the movement has been upgraded to the next-generation caliber 3285 Perpetual movement.

This is a fascinating edition of the GMT Master II that is already sold out at authorized dealers worldwide.
