Russia’s state-controlled gas company, Gazprom, has announced a reduction in gas flow to Europe via Ukraine on the last day of a five-year transit deal. On December 31, the gas flow was reduced to 37.2 million cubic meters, down from 42.4 million cubic meters the previous day. Starting January 1, flows are expected to halt completely, marking the end of the agreement and the loss of Russia's significant influence over the European gas market. Ukraine, which refused to negotiate a new deal due to the ongoing war, will lose about $800 million in transit fees annually, while Gazprom will miss out on approximately $5 billion in gas sales.
