ALBANY - A new Quinnipiac Poll says a majority of New Yorkers want Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to step down. The poll, released Wednesday, says voters want him to leave following the Vito Lopez scandal. The numbers show 51% says he should step down while 22% say he should remain in his role. Despite the numbers democratic assembly members, all but one, are still standing by Silver.I think there is a lot of unfamiliarity of the facts of the Vito Lopez situation, said Assemblymember Phil Steck, D Colonie.The assembly's majority leader is also standing by the Speaker. Joe Morelle, D- Rochester, said it's time for the house to move on.Obviously he has apologized for what I think he said is a lapse in judgement and I don't know that there is anything the members have learned today that they didn't know 6 months ago, Morelle said.However republican lawmakers are still calling for Silver to step down. Assemblymember Steve McLaughlin, D-Melrose, said he has asked the US Attorney's Office to investigate the speaker and his past.You can't get anymore hypocritical than the democratic conference continuing to support this man, McLaughlin said. You want to really protect women get rid of this speaker.
