Boston is the capital and most populous city in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. It is located in Suffolk County, of which it is the county seat. The city has approximately 4.9 million residents in its metropolitan area, making it the largest city in the New England region and a global city with a significant financial, commercial, industrial, and academic center.

Founded by the English in 1630, Boston became the leading cultural hub of Anglo-Saxon America. The British withdrew from the city in 1776 after several uprisings, including the famous Boston Tea Party. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it developed into a major industrial center, attracting immigrants from around the world, particularly from Ireland. The Portuguese community is also significant in the city, especially those from the Azores. Boston also has a large and growing Brazilian community.

Boston is one of the leading educational centers in the United States, home to prestigious institutions such as Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in nearby Cambridge. Additionally, one of the top five English language schools in the world is located in Boston: the New England School of English, situated in Harvard Square. The city also stands out globally for its ambitious "Big Dig" construction project. Several elevated highways were rerouted into tunnels with up to ten lanes. This massive project lasted about 12 years and was completed in 2006.
