In a previous video produced by the UMass Extension Fruit Team, we discussed a field-scale research of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) that has been conducted by Dr. Jaime Piñero and collaborators since 2013. That research demonstrated application of EPNs could reduce plum curculio summer populations by up to 85%, compared to just water applications (control).

The next phase of this work involves on farm demonstrations. On July 17, 2020 Jim Krupa applied one billion nematodes to the soil in order to kill larvae and pupae sheltering there. Nematodes were applied when air temperature was at 65 degrees F, skies were cloudy and there was a light fog. A little more than one tenth of an inch of rain had fallen the night before.

The application was made using one FMC brand, number 8 disc with a three hole whirl plate, filter screen removed. Pressure was adjusted to 25psi and the tractor was driven at a leisurely pace of 1.5 miles per hour putting out approximately 2 gallons per minute, a total of 130 gallons were used. An additional 175 gallons of plain water was used to ensure the nematodes had sufficient moisture to survive. On July 20, 2020, after several days of 90 plus degree weather, another 350 gallons of plain water were applied.
