What is the value of design?

Such a simple question, yet many designers struggle to give a clear and compelling answer. Some even point to a dusty old report by McKinsey 😉.

You’d be forgiven for thinking they’d just been asked “What is the meaning of life?”.

Dave Malouf isn’t one of them. He’s thought about deeply about the value of design.

Until recently, Dave was a Director of Design Operations at Teladoc Health and in episode 35 of #BraveUX I asked him “what is the value of design?”.

Before I share with you what he said, for the sake of context, Dave and I were talking about the value of design inside of enterprise.

Okay, now we’ve got that straight, are you sitting down?

Good.

Here’s what Dave had to say:

💬 “I think for some designers there’s an inconvenient truth to the value of design, which is that design has no value by itself. Design is pre-creation. It is not creation itself. It is the creation of intent but it’s not the execution of intent, necessarily.”

Think about that for a second.

Our well-formed intentions don’t matter if we can’t help others to translate them into reality.

What is the value of design if intent is not realised?

Dave went on to say:

💬 “For me, designing is about amplifying other things and it can be applied to almost all parts of the business… Too often people think of design as the outcome or the output. In my mind design is the verb… of what it takes to create those outcomes, those outputs.”

Now it’s your turn (sorry, not sorry).

What is the value of design?
