Edit: I should have mentioned that Apartheid-era South Africa was actually a nuclear weapons nation briefly, hand-in-hand with the whole militarist thing. They tested their first nuke in 1979 in coordination with Israel (not getting into the politics there), and voluntarily dismantled all of them in 1989, a decade later. They originally developed them to strengthen the nation greatly, and to also prevent any communist incursion from Angola and the like. Irresponsible of me to forget!
