This presentation will focus on assisting faculty in determining the direct rewards of salary and promotion, using VCCS policy 3-7, Faculty Promotions, to guide the conversation.
For years, the field of higher education has provided incentives for its faculty as a form of reward. Traditionally the academic reward structure serves to reward faculty members most successful in the areas of research, teaching, and service. If we categorize the academic reward system into four components: salary, non-monetary satisfaction, promotion, and increases career opportunities; we can clearly see direct and indirect rewards. Direct rewards are salary and promotion and the indirect rewards would be non-monetary satisfaction and increased career opportunities. This presentation will focus on direct rewards, using VCCS policy 3-7, Faculty Promotions, to guide the conversation. The guidelines for the VCCS-29 will be presented and faculty will have an opportunity to use their own salary and rank to determine their next move up the promotional ladder. Administrators, professional and teaching faculty will discover how to use the VCCS requirements to obtain a promotion in rank. For the best outcome in this hands-on workshop, individual faculty will need to know their (1) current salary, (2) present rank, and (3) current column placement on the VCCS-29.
