This iterative soundscape composition combines electroacoustic modeling, conceptualized space data sonifications, interactive wordless intonations and field recordings of glacial geologic and oceanographic activity I gathered on sailing on a research expedition above the 78th parallel in Svalbard. Based on sound as a vibrational phenomenon, the natural events—iceberg torrents, calving glaciers, whale song and converging subterranean rivers of the meltwater channel—are sonically recreated as a score with the intention of “decentralizing the centered and un-othering the others.”

It’s an homage to explorer Matthew Henson—the first to reach the geographic North Pole, a nod to astronauts Dr. Mae C. Jemison and Dr. Ronald McNair, who navigated the outer space that resembles its earthly NASA Terrestrial Analog Site of the Svalbard Arctic desert, and a posthumous dream and a prayer for the young Trayvon Martin, an aviation student and aspiring astronaut, who wore his blue flight suit uniform nearly everyday as a badge of honor.

It is an invitation to find our breaths between isolation, connectivity, loneliness and wonder.

Everywhere We Are is the Farthest Place is an ode rather than an elegy— as far as what it means to praise our surroundings— right now— in the face of rapid change.
