I returned to piano in 2017 and as at January 2022, I'd done about 3,000 hours of practice since then. I thought it about time I did a Top 3 Tips video, however, on planning it it was clear that one video would be far too long. So I've decided to do three separate videos - one for each of my Top Tips.

My first tip is a 'divide and conquer' strategy that I've called Sections, Segments and Snippets. I did a video on Sections some time ago, however, since, I have come to the conclusion that was a somewhat blunt instrument and we can refine it to be much more effective. I was inspired by the way film-makers (including TV Programmes) use a concept of Scenes, Sequences and Shots. In order to keep our interest, films and TV programmes are made up of thousands of 'shots' - many of which might last only a second or two. These shots are then organised into sequences to tell mini-stories which, in turn are finally organised into scenes.

By taking the same approach with our music, after we have divided it into Sections, we can then split those Sections into Segments and then those Segments into Snippets. Like a Shot in a film, a Snippet might only be a second or two but nonetheless will benefit from the attention to detail that a film-maker gives to any individual shot.

The second video to follow will be on how we can then practice these individual Snippets in the most effective way with the third looking at how we then recombine everything into a single piece.
