Fishing during the dog days of summer can be tough. Although, I live on a small lake, I hadn’t fished it in about a month to six weeks. I had been focusing on the larger lakes near me like Jordan, Harris, and Badin. Needless to say I had to figure out what the bass were doing.

I only had a few hours this afternoon to fish. I started shallow on the side of the lake where I live. Here, the thermocline is only about 10 feet deep and there is a lot of submerged vegetation that will grow out to five or six feet. Knowing this, and coupled with the precious days cloud my weather, I first decided to see if I could catch any fish shallow around the grass. I ended up hooking up with a couple. One on a ledge right in front of the grass on a drop shot and another on a swimbait rigged on a ned rig head.

After not having a lot of success, I decided to move to the other side of the lake where the thermocline is usually a bit deeper. I hooked up with two fish on a submerses stump in about 10 feet of water. Those fish also bite the swimbait and the drop shot. Hooking into these two largemouth told me there were still fish out in deeper water. I then picked up the crankbait and caught an almost 5 pound bass over the structure near the drain.

Finally, once the bite died down I took some time to graph a few points in about 10 feet of water. I didn’t see a lot of activity so I opted to head to the lily pads. The Lilly pads always hold fish, it’s just a matter of whether you can get them to bite. Ultimately, I had a couple blow ups on the front, but couldn’t that bass to full commit.

It wasn’t a few bad hours of fishing. Wish I could have landed all the fish and caught a few more, but it was good to get back out and figure the fish out. It seemed like junk fishing, but sometimes that’s what you have to do.
