In this episode of Bill Nye The Science Guy (Season 3, Episode 20), Bill explores the fascinating ways animals move! From walking to flying, swimming to slithering, animals use a variety of methods to get from one place to another. But what makes them move so efficiently?
00:00 - How Animals Move to Survive
Discover why movement is essential for animals to find food, escape predators, and thrive in their environments.
02:26 - How Do Animals Push and Pull to Move?
Learn how animals like humans, cats, and fish use muscles to push and pull their bodies forward.
04:53 - How Do Fish and Squid Swim?
Explore the fascinating swimming techniques of fish, squid, and octopuses, including jet propulsion and muscle control.
06:37 - Why Do Animals Run from Predators?
Find out how animals like horses and sea urchins use speed and agility to escape danger and survive.
09:19 - How Do Snakes and Worms Move Without Legs?

12:24 - How Do Birds and Insects Swim and Fly?
Learn how ducks, beetles, and other animals adapt their legs and wings for movement in water and air.
14:51 - Why Do Lions and Cats Use Their Tails?
Uncover how lions, tigers, and domestic cats use their tails for balance, steering, and precision hunting.
17:30 - How Do Spiders Move Using Blood?
Discover the unique hydraulic system spiders use to straighten their legs and move efficiently.
18:59 - How Do Bumblebees Fly with Such Tiny Wings?
Learn the science behind bumblebee flight, powered by specialised thorax muscles and wing mechanics.
20:14 - How Animal Tracks Reveal Their Movements
See how footprints and tracks can teach us about animal movement, speed, and behaviours in their habitats.
Bill breaks down the mechanics of animal locomotion, explaining how muscle and bone structures allow creatures to adapt to their environments. From bees in flight to cheetahs sprinting across the savannah, this episode demonstrates how movement is a critical part of survival. By using exciting visual experiments, Bill illustrates how animals’ movements are fine-tuned for different types of environments, whether it’s in the air, on land, or in water.
The episode also discusses the science behind energy efficiency in movement. Bill explains how some animals are built to conserve energy while moving, while others burn through energy quickly to achieve faster speeds. You'll also learn about how different body structures—from fins to wings—impact the way animals travel.
With Bill's usual flair for fun and education, this episode is packed with fascinating facts about how animals move and what it means for their survival in the wild. Whether you’re curious about how fish swim or how birds soar, this episode provides a clear, science-backed understanding of the mechanics behind animal locomotion.

Footnote:
Bill Nye The Science Guy was most definitely a huge inspiration for me when growing up. Watching his shows ignited my passion for science and played a pivotal role for sure, in my journey to becoming a development scientist then a teacher.
I've always shared Bill Nye's episodes with my students, even if it was from a poor-quality copy uploaded to a USB in the past, and they've always loved it. Now that technology is allowing it, I've remastered and upscaled all of these classic episodes to 4K.
