Today, July 13, is the birthday of Susan Butler Karnatz. She would be 51 but died in the 2022 Raleigh mass shooting. A devoted mom and amazing wife, Susan was tragically murdered while doing something she loved – out on a local trail completing a 7-mile run. An accomplished distance runner, Sue had completed 4 Boston marathons and multiple triathlons and ultraraces.


Sue was taken from her husband and 3 sons. She paused her career as a school psychologist to home school her boys, diving in and giving them the best education possible. She loved all living creatures, particularly the family dog, Lucy. An avid reader and a student of languages, Sue was a compassionate, tender-hearted person who loved deeply without judgement.


The 15-year-old gunman dressed himself in camo in preparation for his attack. His first target was James, his older brother. He then killed four strangers, including a police officer sitting in his vehicle, and wounded 2 more before being cornered by police and shooting himself in the head. He remains in a rehab facility to this day. Although his motive remains unclear, one thing is certain – he had to easy access to guns.
