Children are routinely exposed to the latest advances in digital imagery, making it difficult to interest them in the subtlety of illustrations. However, children’s illustrator Robert Sabuda overcomes this hurdle by providing mystical detail in his books. Children see such visual treats as Alice’s rabbit hole, Santa’s reindeer or a spinning cyclone from the Wizard of Oz. His phenomenal success has led to two million books in print and the New York Times hailed him as the “indisputable king of pop-ups.” USA Today exclaims, “There are simple pop-up books. And then there is the work of Robert Sabuda.”

Allen Public Library patrons were treated were treated to a rare appearance by Mr. Sabuda.

Mr. Sabuda first creates illustrations with simple necessities-scissors, paper and glue on white paper. The next step involves a series of die lines that are created digitally. The die mold is like a cookie cutter. The pieces are created from a sheet and they are then folded and glued to create the masterpiece.

Raised in Pinckney, Michigan, Mr. Sabuda’s father was a carpenter and mason and his mother owned and operated a local dancing school. She read stories to her children every night. Thus, he was imbued at an early age with the importance of reading and telling stories. “Books are my life,” says Sabuda. “On my tombstone, it will read, ‘Robert Sabuda, bookmaker.’”

Sabuda credits his high school art teacher Maureen Lucas with encouraging and preparing him to attend Pratt Institute of Art and Architecture in New York. “She taught me how to draw, to really draw. I was her lump of clay. A teacher can change the course of your life. She changed mine,” says Sabuda.

In 1994, he completed his first pop-up book, Christmas Alphabet. An enormous hit, it sold out by its first Christmas. Since then, he has illustrated popular favorites—The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, 12 Days of Christmas, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Movable Mother Goose, The Night Before Christmas, and many more.

The Allen Public Library and Friends of the Allen Public Library were honored to have this distinguished artist and writer visit our library.
