Mangrove Restoration, Law and Land Tenure Webinar | Global Mangrove Alliance

Описание к видео Mangrove Restoration, Law and Land Tenure Webinar | Global Mangrove Alliance

This webinar features Associate Professor Justine Bell-James, an expert in environmental law and has published extensively on legal impediments to coastal restoration and legal issues concerning sea level rise, and
Mark West and Mardha Tillah, from Landesa, an organisation that works with communities on land rights. They talk about Landesa’s mangrove work from Bay of Bengal and South-east Asia.

Justine first discusses the context in Australia, where mangrove laws designed to protect mangroves from development are now hindering restoration. She also talks about how the mangrove protection laws are not complete, and can be overcome most of the time by applying for permits. These permits are costly and time-consuming to complete, so are holding up restoration of mangrove ecosystems.

Mark West and Mardha Tillah then talk about Landesa’s work to secure land rights for people on the coasts. Mark covers the legal context in different countries, from Myanmar to Thailand, and how this affects their work to get some of the world’s poorest people the rights to use and manage their lands. Tillah talks about the situation in Indonesia, where mangrove governance is fragmented across multiple institutions.

In the Q&A we discuss the impacts of sea level rise on land-tenure, who has the right to benefit from carbon credits and the importance of gaining formal land tenure for indigenous communities.
