March 12th, 2011: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has said terrorism and extremism is a global challenge therefore, it demands a collective response by all stakeholders because no single country can eliminate this menace single-handedly. Addressing the concluding session of Aman Exercise on Saturday, being held in the Arabian Sea, the Prime Minister said Pakistan Navy, apart from performing the noble duty of defending sea frontiers of Pakistan, is also committed to the peace and stability of the entire region. The Prime Minister hoped that Aman series of exercises will continue in future to attain the desired result for interoperability and peace in the region. He said all the peace-loving nations must join their hands and cooperate in all fields to overcome the challenge of terrorism. Later, Gilani witnessed the naval exercises conducted by Pakistan Navy and participated by 11 other countries. The exercises were aimed at helping the navies to interact with one another about operational capabilities. The Amn Exercise was carried out to adopt a collective international maritime response against multi-dimensional sea-borne threats including piracy at high seas, human and drug smuggling, and terrorism. Naval assets including ships, helicopters, submarines, and special forces elements, of the navies of 39 nations actively participated in the exercise, sailed out to the Arabian Sea where the maritime maneuvers are in progress. Various tactical maneuvers, replenishment at sea including transfer of men and material from one ship to another, surface firing on pre-determined targets, countering air-to-surface, and surface-to-surface threats, insertion of commandos on ships through helicopters and anti-submarine warfare exercises were conducted during the exercises. The participating countries, besides, Pakistan included: Australia, China, France, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia,Turkey, Sri Lanka, UK and USA. The observer countries included Algeria, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Brunei, Canada, Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Libya, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nigeria, Netherlands, Oman, Philippines, Poland, Qatar, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Sudan, Thailand, UAE, Thailand, UAE, Ukraine and Yemen.
