The top 3 things that you can do to create the perfect eyeline in your next audition.

Bad eyelines can mess up a perfectly good audition. Misplaced eyelines weaken your audition big time!

So here are 3 things you can do to create the perfect eyeline in your next audition.

Step #1 to create the perfect eyeline for an audition

Always make the most important character the reader.

Number one, make the most important character in your scene the reader.

Now a great audition has a real connection between people and it is much easier to create that real connection with another human being than it is a spot on the wall. Trust me.

So if there’s only one other character in the scene, always, always, always make the reader that other character. Never look directly into the camera lens.

Now for a self-taped audition, place your “human reader” 8 – 12 inches off the lens of the camera, to the left or the right. Whichever side works best for you. That way the viewer can see all of the magic that’s happening in your eyes and you don’t look like a spokesperson for a commercial.

Step #2 to create the perfect eyeline for an audition

Create an eyeline for each important character. (Up to 3 that is.)

If there are two other characters in your audition scene, place the other character on the other side of the camera lens. Never make the second character the director or the producer. They are not there to act with you. They are there to watch you and it makes them feel uncomfortable if you are staring at them, staring at you.

See how that would be weird?

By placing the other character on the other side of the camera, the viewers are clear that you are talking to someone else in the scene.
