On our first dive of the Valor in the Atlantic expedition in NOAA Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, we explored the wreck of the USS Monitor. The USS Monitor was a Civil War vessel and was made the first national marine sanctuary in 1975. The USS Monitor was the first armored ship used by the Union Navy winning the historic fight against the armored Confederate ship the Virginia. She was lost after being caught in a storm off of Cape Hatteras.

All footage was gathered with ROV Yogi, which are designed, maintained, and operated by the Global Foundation for Ocean Exploration in partnership with NOAA Ocean Exploration.
