This is a simple song about my favorite five minutes of the year. Anyone who has been to the late Christmas Eve service at a church knows that each person receives a candle as they enter. Then, at the conclusion of the service, everyone leaves their seat to become part of a circle around the outside of the sanctuary. The pastor lights his or her candle from the Christ Candle, then offers the flame to the people to the left and right. Each person lights the next person's candle until a ring of flickering candles encircles the completely darkened room. Whispers of light spread love through the night. Then we sing "Silent Night".
There are dozens of stories comparing the light spreading from one person to the next to sharing the story and love of Jesus, to the way the circle cannot be completed if even one person's candle isn't shining.
I marvel at the way families, friends, and acquaintances, children to the elderly, wealthy to the needy, even those of a different faith, can join with our extended families and even complete strangers to share this moment and the peace it never fails to bring. For that moment, at least,
we are all children, all loved by our Lord.
I stole one line from 'O Holy Night', probably my favorite passage of any carol. The point being to note that God wants our hearts and our praise regardless of our earthly standing. Rich or poor, if we claim Him as our Savior, he'll take us home when the time comes.
