The signs that wiper blades need replaced are obvious—streaking or smearing, splitting or cracking—and it is recommended you change them every six months. But when the time comes to change them, what are you looking for? Do you know which replacement blades you want or need for your vehicle?
The first thing to determine is which blades will fit. Chances are, you’ll have several options. You can determine the blades that will fit by:
• putting your vehicle information into OReillyAuto.com
• using a wiper blade kiosk at one of our stores, or
• stopping by and talking to a Parts Professional
The options available for your vehicle may include the following blade types:
A conventional wiper blade is also called a bracket-type blade, because it has a metal framework that the wiper itself is attached to. These brackets are designed to keep the blade in contact with the windshield, but over time, the brackets lose some of their spring and can cause streaking. This type of blade is considered entry-level. It’s affordable, and it’s available for almost any vehicle.
Winter precipitation is one of the biggest issues for the conventional blade, because snow and ice can settle into the brackets and prevent them from keeping the blade consistently against the glass. That’s why the next option, a conventional winter wiper blade, works great where winter precipitation is a normal part of the climate. These feature a rubber sheath that protects the brackets from being affected by snow or ice.
A beam wiper blade is a state-of-the-art blade that offers superior construction, and often features higher-quality rubber for better wiping performance. Instead of brackets, the beam blade is made with a single piece of spring steel inside the blade that contours to the windshield. This makes for more uniform wiping and fewer issues in extreme weather conditions. They’re also made with a special spoiler to help keep the blade firmly against the glass in strong winds or while driving at high speeds.
There is also a winter beam wiper blade that offers the same benefits of a typical beam blade, but also features a contoured shell for protection from snow and ice. In addition, this blade is crafted with a sturdier, more robust construction to better withstand the extreme conditions of winter temperatures and precipitation.
If it’s time to replace your wipers, don’t forget about your rear wiper blade. O’Reilly Auto Parts carries a full selection of rear wiper replacements, and depending on the vehicle, both conventional and beam blades may be available.
Wiper blades are made with a variety of different attachments for fitment on different wiper arm styles, but if you purchase your wipers at one of our stores, you won’t have to worry about how to install them—we’d be happy to install them for you, free of charge.
