Opening day comments from Najib Joe Hakim about his new exhibition in the Jewett Gallery of the Main Library. Najib Joe Hakim’s second project in a proposed trilogy about the Palestinian experience in America is called "Home Away from Home: Little Palestine by the Bay". Essentially, the project explores the question “What does it mean to be Palestinian in America?” Home is a multi-media photography exhibit juxtaposing recorded oral histories (in English) with B&W portraits from the San Francisco Bay Area Palestinian community, second largest in the US. The viewer will be able to hear the voice while looking into the photographed faces of the people telling their stories. There is also a video component to this exhibition comprised of three related ten-minute videos. These twenty-seven members of the Bay Area Palestinian community describe how and why they maintain ties to and aspirations for their homeland Palestine; and how they reconcile this with life in a country whose political culture is so profoundly hostile to those aspirations.
