Why do we perform Shraddha or Tarpan for ancestors? Why is this practice prevalent among Hindus? This is not a superstition! Let us try to understand this from the perspective of Ayurveda. Ayurveda advises us to eat only twice a day. People who do this are called "Bhogis". On the other hand, Yogis eat only once a day. Now consider this perspective of time. It is believed that in the other world, where the soul goes, one day there is equal to one year on Earth, i.e. 365 days. Now the other aspect is that when a body dies, the soul merges with the Supreme Soul. And by this process the soul automatically becomes a Yogi. As explained earlier, a Yogi needs food only once a year. And because one year on Earth is one day on that world, so when we offer food once a year in Shraddha or Tarpan, it means that the soul is getting food every day. This is why we perform Shraddha for our ancestors once a year, so that their souls keep getting food and remain satisfied.
