We recently got a Boss Industrial® 27-ton gas-powered log splitter. After assembling it and using it, here are our impressions.

We have one of Boss Industrial®’s electric log splitters, and we’ve been pleased with it. We purchased that well over a year ago, and it’s a strong performer. We featured that splitter on our channel and reviewed it. After seeing the video, the Boss Industrial® Management Team reached out to us and asked if we’d like to review a couple of other pieces of equipment and assist them with assembly videos. We were glad to. Like always, we insist on an agreement where we produce authentic reviews and tell our positive or negative impressions. They readily agreed. They supplied the 27-ton version of their gas engine log splitter.

   • Boss Industrial 5” Chipper-Shredder Assembly  

We have a sizable wood processing area, and we’ve used it there and for our friend and neighbor, Mark. Mark is featured in this video as he processes elm for use in his shop’s barrel stove.

There are several things we like about the machine:

1. Good tires and rims.
2. Heavy-duty components and frame. The main spine of the machine is a heavy gauge steel I-beam. It’s heavier than I’ve seen on several other competing models.
3. Dual mode for either horizontal or vertical use.
4. Easy to reach latches to pivot and secure the machine into either mode.
5. Intuitive control handle
6. The 250 cc engine is manufactured by a long-term and reputable company, Briggs and Stratton. That means it is easy to get parts and services should they be needed.
7. Cycle time is 15 seconds - not the fastest out there, but is still very productive
8. 8” splitting wedge and log extractor on the return
9. Auto shut off on return stroke - protects the valve and hydraulic system
10. Trailer hitch and swing down jack stand

Here are some things that we felt could be improved or we wish were different:

1. The log trays could be bigger - larger log portions tend to roll off
2. The ventilated fill cap for the hydraulic reservoir is directly below one of the log trays. This makes it challenging to add fluid
3. It is very difficult to read the hydraulic fluid level on the dipstick - especially when the fluid is fresh
4. The control handle sticks in the forward position from time to time and must be quickly disengaged to avoid stress on the pump
5. Because of the gauge of the materials used in the product, and how the components need to be arranged on the frame, the log splitter is very heavy on the tongue. This makes it difficult to move the machine manually. Since this is the configuration that is needed to have the machine operate, a sizable grip handle on the tool’s tongue would make it easier to move and place
6. While the machine has an integrated fluid filter inside the reservoir tank, I would prefer to have a larger “stand-alone” screw-type filter out in the open

Even with the list of things we’d like to see be different, none or all of them add up to make this machine a poor investment. It’s better built than all the others I typically see in front of farm and ranch supply stores and even big-box home improvement centers.

After using the machine for an afternoon, my friend Mark observed that it was well-built, worked well, and allowed him to quickly and efficiently set aside a firewood store for his winter shop activities. He gave it the “thumbs-up,” and so do we.
