Heavenly Father, please help me with my family. Fill my heart with love, peace and charity and expel from it all divisive thoughts. Please touch the heart of my in-laws, bring them closer to you through the intercession of Saint Adelaide, so that our family can be whole, united and dedicated to you. I ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
🌹MORE ABOUT OF ST. ADELAIDE🌹
St Adelaide was an Italian saint who lived in the 900s. She was married to the Holy Roman Emperor Otto the Great. She was crowned Holy Roman Empress to rule alongside her husband.
Throughout her life, St Adelaide was known for her holy works.
St Adelaide was born in 931, in the Kingdom of Upper Burgundy (modern Switzerland). Her parents were the king and queen of Burgundy.
When Adelaide was fifteen years old, she was married to Lothair II of Italy, as part of a political arrangement to bring about peace between their fathers’ countries. She and Lothair had a daughter named Emma.
Three years after they married, Lothair died. He was allegedly poisoned by Berengar II of Italy, who was Lothair’s successor. Berengar then attempted to force Adelaide to marry his son, Adalbert. She refused and fled, but Berengar had his men pursue her. Once she was caught, he imprisoned her for four months.
Adelaide was able to escape from her captivity, and she hid in some nearby marshes. Eventually, a priest rescued her and brought her to a fortress. From there, she sent word to the East Frankish king Otto and asked him to protect her. She and Otto married in 951. The two of them had four children together.
For the next six years, as Otto ruled his kingdom from Italy, Adelaide remained in Rome. In 967, their son Otto II was crowned co-emperor and married a Byzantine princess named Theophanu.
Adelaide and her husband Otto eventually returned to Germany. Otto died here in 973.
After Otto’s death, Adelaide lived with her brother in Burgundy. During this time, she established several monasteries and churches. She passionately devoted herself to serving the Church and working for peace. She also began work in evangelism, particularly working for the conversion of the Slavs.
Though Adelaide had a quarrel with her son Otto II, the two of them reconciled before he died in 983. His son Otto III was next in line for the throne, and Adelaide served as regent for Otto III until he was of legal age to rule, four years later.
St Adelaide is the patron saint of brides, parenthood, and parents of large families. You can ask her for prayers if you are a new bride or a parent.
She is also the patron saint of step-parents, widows, and second marriages. You can seek her intercession if you are a step-parent or a widow, or if you are beginning your second marriage.
St Adelaide is also the patron saint of exiles, prisoners, and abuse victims. You can ask for her prayers on behalf of someone you know who is an exile, prisoner, or abuse victim; or if you yourself are enduring one of these struggles.
