আলম খানের সুর ও সঙ্গীত পরিচালনায় অসংখ্য জনপ্রিয় গানের মধ্যে রয়েছে- ‘জীবনের গল্প আছে বাকি অল্প’, ‘হায়রে মানুষ রঙিন ফানুস’, ‘আমি রজনীগন্ধা ফুলের মতো’, ‘ডাক দিয়াছেন দয়াল আমারে’, ‘কি জাদু করিলা’, ‘ওরে নীল দরিয়া’, ‘তুমি যেখানে আমি সেখানে’, ‘সবাই তো ভালোবাসা চায়’, ‘ভালোবেসে গেলাম শুধু’, ‘চাঁদের সাথে আমি দেবো না’, ‘আমি একদিন তোমায় না দেখিলে’, ‘সাথীরে যেও না কখনো দূরে’, ‘কাল তো ছিলাম ভালো’, ‘চুমকি চলেছে একা পথে’, ‘তেল গেলে ফুরাইয়া’ ইত্যাদি।

আলম খান শ্রেষ্ঠ সঙ্গীতপরিচালক হিসেবে ১৯৮২ সালে মহিউদ্দিন পরিচালিত ‘বড় ভালো লোক ছিল’ সিনেমার মাধ্যমে প্রথম জাতীয় চলচ্চিত্র পুরস্কার পান। এরপর তিনি ‘তিন কন্যা’ (১৯৮৫), ‘সারেন্ডার’ (১৯৮৭), ‘দিনকাল (১৯৯২) এবং ‘বাঘের থাবা’ (১৯৯৯), ‘এবাদত’ (২০০৯) ছবিগুলোতে একই পুরস্কারে ভূষিত হন। শ্রেষ্ঠ সুরকার হিসেবে ২০০৮ সালে জাতীয় চলচ্চিত্র পুরস্কার পেয়েছেন ‘কি জাদু করিলা’ ছবির জন্য।
