The dog chewed the controller wire Fortunately the wires inside are all color-coded. The most difficult part of this repair, was how close the chewed part, was to the remote, so I had very little wire to work with. Also, the wires and sheathing were almost brittle.

1) I took apart the handle to see if there was any wire slack I could access, and also to get closer access to the ends of the wires.

2) I trimmed off the damaged strain-relief parts, but left what was still functional.

3) Cut the wires so I could put heat shrink on. Stripped back the housing far enough to get working space around the heat shrink.

4) stripped, fluxed, soldered and heat-shrank each wire.

5) heat-shrank the outer wire. I used a special heat shrink for this, which has basically a hot-glue coating on the inside of it. The inner coating melts when you shrink it, seals the connection and kinda glues the inner parts together. I used Digikey part 3M161951-ND.

It worked great. The only improvement I would have made, is not used hot glue to patch the top part of the strain relief. It cracked immediately. I would have trimmed the top of the strain relief so I could slide the heat shrink all the way to the top. Or at least, put another wider piece of heat shrink over the hot glue.
