September 27, 2024 Hurricane Helene Makes Landfall in Florida, this Category 4 storm ranks among the most powerful hurricanes to strike the United States. 1 day later, the remnants of that hurricane, now downgraded to a tropical storm, hits Western North Carolina, leaving behind catastrophic flooding and massive destruction in its wake. The storm yielded some of the highest rainfall totals – followed by some of the highest river levels, and the most severe flooding – ever observed across the region. The heavy rain sent rivers near or above their major flood stages, and that rising water overwhelmed communities across the region. In this video we bring you footage of the overflowing French Broad River and some of the destruction we witnessed after the storm had passed.
