The unit measures 8 ⅞ inches deep by 6 inches wide by 10 ¾ inches tall. The glass carafe holds 5 cups and has markings. The lid has a steam vent. The water tank is plastic and removable with a handle, it also has markings. You can see the water level gauge on the side of the unit. A measuring spoon and instruction manual is included. The cone basket sits inside the carafe while brewing. The lid locks onto the cone. There’s a charcoal water filter that attaches on top here. According to Zojirushi, this filter should last up to 2 years with normal use. Turn it to detach.

If you accidentally get water in here, there is a hole that the water will flow out of. Make sure this area is dry in general. With most plastic coffee makers, there may be a smell of plastic when you first get the unit.

I’ll make 4 cups of coffee. Plug in the unit. Pour in 4 cups of cold water directly into the tank or remove the tank and fill it. This unit takes a #2 cone paper filter. You can also use a permanent filter. Fold the filter on the bottom and side, put it in the basket. Put 4 level scoops of ground coffee ( don’t use a fine grind of coffee in this machine). Put the cover on, the hole snaps onto this tab. Turn the unit on. It took 5.5 minutes to make the 4 cups of coffee. There is no beep to let you know the coffee is finished brewing. You’ll see the coffee has stopped dripping and hear a few bursts of steam. Turn the unit off.

Remove the carafe. Since the cone is in the carafe, there’s no dripping from the machine when you remove the carafe. Press the handle and don’t tilt the carafe too much while pouring because you don’t want the cone basket to fall out. I haven’t had that problem and pressing it here seems enough to keep the cone basket in. The coffee is hot and tastes like a good cup of coffee. You can leave the unit on and keep the coffee warm on the warming plate. It’s not a good idea to leave it longer than 15 minutes because that could affect the taste of the coffee.

To clean turn the unit off and unplug. When it’s cool, wipe down the coffee maker with a damp cloth and dry. The tank, lid, cone basket, lid and carafe can be washed with warm soapy water and dried. The filter can be rinsed under running water and dried. Don’t use any soap on the filter. None of the parts are dishwasher safe. Also don’t use hot water to clean the unit, only warm water. If the dripping vent gets clogged, there are instructions to clean the unit with citric acid. There are also instructions in the manual to make iced coffee.

This Zojirushi is a compact unit great for small kitchens. It’s ideal for families with few coffee drinkers. There’s nothing complicated about this unit, it’s very simple to use and designed well.
