Windmill and Nolsoy, Faroe Islands.

The Faroe Islands is one of the most windy places in the world, and that also makes it a perfect place to erect wind turbines. And the islanders do that to in order to become independent of power supply from expensive oil based power stations and to contribute to solving the climate change challenge of Europe. The ambition is that 24% of the Faroe Islands' power consumption will be covered by wind power in 2014.

But the Faroe Islands are also one of the places in the world where it is most difficult to integrate intermittent renewable energy into the grid. The reason for this is primarily that the island group does not have any power cables to the continent or other islands, it only has a few power stations and it has a climate characterized by severe storms. This results in frequent and extensive power outages today, and the security of supply will be further challenged when the share of wind power double in 2014.
