St. Lucy (Santa Lucia), Virgin and Martyr, is one of the most glorious saints of the early Church and a radiant ornament of Christian Sicily. In this reading from “The Lives of the Saints” by Father Alban Butler, we hear the powerful account of St. Lucy of Syracuse, whose heroic faith, chastity, and charity shone brightly during the fierce Diocletian persecution (AD 304).

Born to wealthy and noble parents in Syracuse, St. Lucy consecrated her virginity to Christ at a young age. When her mother was miraculously healed at the tomb of St. Agatha, Lucy revealed her vow and devoted her fortune to the poor. Betrayed and accused as a Christian, she endured unspeakable torments, miraculously resisting fire and cruelty before dying gloriously for Christ.

St. Lucy is especially venerated as the patroness of the eyes and those suffering from eye diseases, often depicted holding her eyes on a dish—symbolizing spiritual vision and purity of heart.

This reading also includes a profound moral reflection on the education of children, temperance, purity, and the dangers of sensuality and vanity—an enduring lesson for Christian families today.
