Thinnan was born in a hunter’s family. One day, while hunting with friends, he found a Shiva Lingam on a hill. He didn’t know how to worship in the proper way, but his heart was full of love for Lord Shiva.

Since he had no pot, he carried water in his mouth, picked flowers from the forest, and even brought meat from his hunt as an offering. With innocence and devotion, he poured the water from his mouth, placed the flowers, and offered the meat to Lord Shiva.

The temple priest was upset seeing this, but Lord Shiva told him that Thinnan’s love was as pure as any ritual.

To test him, Shiva made the Lingam’s eyes bleed. Thinnan, without thinking twice, pulled out his own eye to stop the bleeding. When the other eye also started bleeding, he was ready to give that too, guiding it with his foot. At that moment, Shiva appeared before him, stopped him, and blessed him with the name Kannappa Nayanar — the one whose devotion was greater than rituals.

This story shows that God values the love in our hearts more than the rules of worship. True devotion comes from sincerity, not from perfection.
