NYU Law's European Legal Society and Student Bar Association were honored to host Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, Belarusian opposition leader, pro-democracy advocate, and recipient of the Sakharov Prize and Charlemagne Prize, for a meaningful discussion on democracy and the rule of law in Belarus and Europe. After running against Alexander Lukashenko in the 2020 presidential election, she was held by Belarusian authorities and then forced into exile in Lithuania, where she continues her work as international representative of a democratic Belarus. Also joining the discussion were her husband Siarhei Tsikhanouski, who was recently released from political imprisonment in Belarus under U.S. pressure, her Chief Advisor Franak Viacorka, and Anna Matsiyeuskaya, NYU LLM student and Belarusian human rights activist.

This timely discussion, moderated by Professor Rick Pildes, sheds light on the current state of human rights in Belarus, the struggle for democracy, and the importance of international efforts to secure the release of political prisoners.
