DILUVIAL
a sonnet by Timothy Whitworth Smith

God saw how corrupt the earth
had become, for all the people
on earth had corrupted their ways.
Genesis 6:12

The end of time began with Noah’s cue
to build a boat large enough to spare
the wildlife, two by two. In taking care
to save this fetid crew, who knew
he would then disrobe in a drunken fest
of red meat? Is this the storied lore
of husbandry gone awry, or more
his weary dove an olive leaf undressed?
Be that as may be, the end of time
was fathomed first by those who mocked his boat,
which holy maelstrom raised on high, afloat
to mind their pimped consciousness of crime
committed more than once or twice
in slavish voyeuristic vice.
