Birds of paradise are some of the most fascinating creatures on Earth. David Attenborough famously said they are his favourite bird species. On my recent trip to Papua New Guinea I was able to see, hear and record several species including the King of Saxony bird of paradise.

All birds of paradise have evolved unique and sometimes bizarre features. From plumage to mating rituals and calls/sounds, everything about them is unexpected. King of Saxony males have two very long occipital feathers that they show off in mating and territorial displays. The sounds they make are weird and beautiful, a mix of screeching, chirping and hissing that crescendoes for a few seconds and then stops abruptly.

King of Saxony bird of paradise males will display at the top of trees and they have a number of trees they prefer in their territory. Using drop rigs was not the best way to record them since it was not possible to predict where they would land and sing from on any given day. Instead I had to use a shotgun microphone and to follow the bird around until it looked like it would settle in a tree, at which point I had to quickly set up the rig (plus the camera) and hope it wouldn't fly off right away. It was a pleasant cat and mouse game that took me a while to get right.
