UB40, formed in Birmingham, England, in 1978, became one of the most successful reggae bands internationally. Their music blended reggae, pop, and ska, gaining a global following. UB40’s breakout hit, “Red Red Wine”, released in 1983, became a worldwide chart-topping anthem. Originally written by Neil Diamond in 1967, UB40’s version reached No. 1 on the UK and US charts. The band’s other hits include “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You,” “Food for Thought”, “Cherry Oh Baby”, “Homely Girl”, “Our Own Song”, “Please Don’t Make Me Cry", “Higher Ground”, “Here I Am (Come and Take Me)”, “Rat in the Kitchen” and “Kingston Town.” Over their career, UB40 earned multiple platinum and gold albums, selling over 70 million records worldwide. Known for their politically charged lyrics and distinctive sound, they toured extensively until 2020, when founding member Ali Campbell left the band and started his own UB40-band. Despite lineup changes, UB40’s legacy in reggae remains strong. This live-performance is from Dutch tv programme “Cor & Co” and broadcast on December 22, 2000.

TopPop was the first regular dedicated pop music TV show in the Dutch language area. Dutch broadcaster AVRO aired the programme weekly, from 1970 to 1988. Presenter Ad Visser hosted the show for its first fifteen years.
