VII. Lauda Sion

From 'Eight Short Preludes on Gregorian Themes', op. 45. Composed in 1948.

"The sequence Lauda Sion is a hymn of twenty-four verses, to be used at Mass on the Feast of Corpus Christi; "ecce panis angelorum" is the twenty-first verse. Dupré treats the first two phrases of the seventh mode melody as a three-part fugue, using 8' and 4' foundations and mixtures in common time. The construction follows exactly the same plan that he developed for his four-part Modal Fugues, Opus 63, to which the present piece makes the perfect introduction. The two episodes are developed from figures found within the subject, and the final section contains two examples of stretto, the first at the fifth above at two beats distance in bar 42, the second at bar 48 at the fifth below in augmentation. This fugue is a real "multum in parvum". Besides its powerful impact in performance, close study will show students of fugue almost all they need to know for examination purposes: it even has a recurring countersubject in invertible counterpoint which is not discarded until the bar before the first stretto."
