Texas needs smart water management to meet growing water needs while facing declining supplies. Net Zero Water is a One Water strategy that invites the urban environment to contribute to water accessibility by leveraging water reuse at the building footprint scale. Buildings can be equipped to capture, store, treat, and reuse a variety of source waters such as air conditioning condensate, rainwater, and even treated wastewater to meet significant portions, if not all, of their water demands.

This reuse strategy improves a building’s water resiliency and reliability while alleviating strain on traditional groundwater and surface water supplies. Texas Water Trade launched the Net Zero Water Toolkit – a public resource designed to guide property developers, owners/operators, and other land development professionals in Texas from design, to permitting, to maintenance of onsite water reuse.

Across Texas, many projects have already recognized the advantage of Net Zero Water systems, and this presentation will explore the various sources, treatments, and uses for onsite reuse water and showcase technologies already operating in Central Texas.
