On this week’s In the Know, host Charles Van Horn spoke with Heather Tinsman, Ogle County coordinator for Toys for Tots, about the official start of the holiday toy drive and the impact it has on local families. Tinsman, who has led the program for five years, said last year nearly 955 children in Ogle County received toys, books, and gifts thanks to community donations and support. While the program often sees plenty of gifts for younger children, she stressed the ongoing need for items for older kids, such as board games, sports equipment, and art supplies. Applications for families in need are now open online, and new, unwrapped toy donations, as well as cash contributions, will be collected at sites across the county through early December. Special events, including Rochelle’s Quartermania and other local fundraisers, will also help support the effort.
